Message from Toni Wortman, Past President
I’ve celebrated Shabbat with
Maccabi USA at 8 Maccabiah Games, 7 Pan American Maccabi Games and 4 European
Maccabi Games, but I’ve never experienced a Kabbalat Shabbat quite like the one
held at the Juegos
Panamericanos Maccabi in Santiago this past
evening.
Athletes, coaches, mangers,
medical personnel, members of the Chilean Games Organizing Committee,
representatives of the Chilean Jewish community, Heads of Delegations, MUSA
Supporters and Maccabi World Union leaders from Israel and around the world
came together to welcome Shabbat at the soccer stadium at the EIM, which
overlooks the Andes. There were hundreds of people representing all of the
countries participating in Chile.
Celebrating Shabbat on New Year’s
Day, sharing the beauty of our Jewish heritage with Jews from around the world,
the gracious hospitality of the Chilean organizers and the warm welcome we
received from members of the Jewish community made this a truly meaningful and
amazing event.
Our participation in these
Games demonstrates our support for the Chilean Jewish Community, our dedication
to the ideals of Maccabi, our commitment to the continuity of the Jewish people
and our unbreakable bond with the State of Israel. Moments like these make me
proud to be a part of the Maccabi Movement.
Shabbat Shalom,
Toni Wortman Past President
